Entry Set 04 · Scarcity

The Carrot Loop

The commission structure nobody ever quite hits. The promotion that is always six months away. The raise that requires one more quarter of strong performance. The bonus that gets restructured every year just before it would have paid out.

The machine running this loop has confused motivated employees with desperate ones.

In the short term the carrot works. In the long term it produces exactly the workforce it deserves. People who learn to game the metrics rather than serve the customer. People who leave the moment a competitor offers them a real number. People who warn every new hire in the parking lot about what the job actually pays versus what the interview promised.

The turnover rate never gets connected to the compensation structure that caused it. The manager who designed the carrot structure gets to keep designing carrot structures because the connection between the cause and the cost is invisible to anyone whose status depends on not seeing it.

The best people are not the most desperate people. They are the people with the most options. And options mean they leave first.

The Inquiry
What am I actually offering the people who work for me? If the carrot disappeared tomorrow who would stay and why?
