The Freemium Trap

Free photo enhancement — until you see the watermark. Free song creation — until the fifteen second preview ends. Free trial — until the credit card charge appears on day sixteen of a fifteen day trial.

The business running this model has made a calculated decision. The cost of honest marketing is higher than the cost of the deception. Get the customer invested first. Reveal the price after they have already put in the time.

The calculation ignores one thing. The feeling of being tricked doesn't scale with the dollar amount. The tribal alarm doesn't distinguish between a $9.99 monthly subscription and a significant fraud. The feeling is identical — I was manipulated into this — and the response is identical — I will never trust this again.

The one star review says it every time. They don't tell you about the paywall until you are already invested. That review is not about the price. It is about the protocol.

The Inquiry
Does our customer know exactly what they are signing up for before they sign up? Where in our funnel are we making it harder to say no than it should be?
