The Identity Hostage

The owner who started the business because they hated what the big guys were doing — and then built something so personal, so tied to their own identity, that they became its hostage rather than its owner.

The anti-corporate coffee shop that cannot expand because expanding would mean becoming what it was built in reaction against. The independent restaurant that cannot update the menu because every dish is a story and changing the story feels like betrayal. The craft brewery with ten locations that couldn't hear a single idea that didn't originate with the founder because the business was the founder.

The machine cannot distinguish between the business needing to evolve and the self needing to disappear. The result is a business frozen in its founding identity long after the market has moved on.

Is this the business I built or the identity I am protecting? They are not the same thing. The business is a living entity that grows and changes. The identity is a story the machine is telling about who you are based on what you built at a specific moment in time.
