The Trust Without Structure Glitch

Not every expensive lesson comes from watching someone else run the program. Some come from running it yourself.

A colleague introduces you to someone with a good project and a credible pedigree. You get along well. The excitement of the opportunity substitutes for the simple professional structure that would have protected everyone. You do the work. You deliver. The check never comes.

The contract doesn't protect you from people you don't trust. It protects you from people you do.

The trust that makes a relationship worth having and the structure that makes a business transaction survivable are not the same thing. Keeping them separate is not cynicism. It is clarity. The warmth belongs in the relationship. The structure belongs in the agreement. Confusing the two is what the machine does when the tribal belonging circuit says this person is safe and the pedigree says this situation is legitimate.

Neither one is a contract.
