The Meritocracy Myth
The best qualified candidate doesn't always get the job. The best product doesn't always win the contract. The most capable vendor doesn't always get called back.
Not because the decision makers are corrupt. Because the tribal hierarchy program is running underneath every selection decision and it has its own criteria that have nothing to do with merit. Relationship. Familiarity. Comfort. Status alignment. The sense that this person belongs in the room or doesn't.
The struggling actor at the bar who dismisses the one who just booked the national commercial. She only got it because she knew somebody. Maybe. But the one at the bar also knew somebody. They just hadn't invested in that relationship the way the working actor had.
The Meritocracy Myth protects the ego from examining the real variables. Understanding that the tribal hierarchy runs the selection process isn't cynicism. It is clarity. And clarity is where strategy begins.
