The Scale Before Foundation Glitch

More locations. More employees. More revenue. More complexity. Each addition looks like progress on the spreadsheet and feels like validation in the room where the decision gets made.

What the spreadsheet doesn't measure is whether the thing that made the first location worth coming to is present in the second. Whether the culture that produced the original customer experience can be replicated at scale or whether it was entirely dependent on the founder's presence and the founding team's energy.

The review that says it used to be so much better before they expanded is not a review about size. It is a review about the thing that got left behind somewhere around location four.

If the answer to what made this work requires the founder to be physically present to be true — the Scale Before Foundation Glitch is already running. The founder cannot be in ten places at once. A business that requires the founder's presence to deliver its core promise is not a scalable business.

The Inquiry
What made this work in the first place? Is that thing still present everywhere we have taken it — or did we scale the structure without scaling the soul?
